The Origin of Roadside Popcorn

Roadside Popcorn Chef 2

As poor kids in Katy, Texas, we found joy in sharing popcorn. Not really. We competed to see who could eat the most and the fastest or who could keep up with Dad and his huge bowls as we watched baseball, movies, or The Fall Guy. Thank goodness it was a cheap snack and mom and dad always had plenty!

15 years later while serving a mission in Ecuador, families with dirt floors and skinny kids would ask missionaries what our favorite meals were so they could sacrifice and provide that to a humble servant of God. I found out early how hard it is to eat in front of hungry kids so I started telling everyone who’d listen that my favorite food was canguil, Ecuadorian word for popcorn. It’s so much easier to share a bowl of popcorn than a plate of rice or a salad, and the kids loved it too!

So when Covid hit, and the pandemic lockdown closed my event promotion business and livelihood, I figured that popcorn could bring us all some joy again and maybe fill in for some lost income. So now I make delicious kettle corn and other specialty corns for people to eat all by themselves, compete with their siblings, or share with their friends. Hearing people say that I make the best kettle corn they’ve ever had doesn’t pay the bills, but it gives me joy knowing that their lives are a little better during such a trying time in our lives.
